Nail clip/Anal gland expression

We know clipping your pet’s nails can be harder than it looks. If you need a pro on the job, HomeVetBondi can come to you and perform a mani/pedi for your dog or cat at a time that suits you. For pets that find having their nails trimmed stressful, having it done at home will eliminate that additional stress of traveling to the clinic.

While anal sac problems are rare in cats and large breed dogs, if you own a small or medium sized dog you may be familiar with having to take them to the vet to have their anal glands expressed. These glands, important for scent marking, are normally expressed naturally during defecation however they can become sore and impacted in certain dogs and require being manually expressed by a veterinarian. This may need to be done on a regular basis for some animals (NB: you can learn to do this yourself at home if you prefer).

Those animals more at risk of anal gland impaction include:

•   small breed dogs

•   overweight dogs

•   dogs with a recent history of soft stools/diarrhoea.

Signs to look out for that may indicate your pet has an anal gland impaction include scooting their bottom along the ground, licking or biting excessively at their back end/tail and straining to defecate. If you notice any of these signs in your pet, please give us a call today. If anal gland impactions aren’t addressed early, they can develop into serious infections
